With the release of Netflix’s The Last Dance series bringing a fresh wave of sneaker enthusiasts, demand for the iconic red, white, and black colourway has surged to new heights. Recognising this, Nike has ensured the Air Jordan 1 is now available in a full range of sizes, catering to men, women, and juniors alike.
Now, picture yourself rummaging through the forgotten corners of a quaint mom-and-pop store in the US, only to stumble upon a weathered shoebox, its mismatched lid telling a story of its own. This is the inspiration behind the design. The Jordan Brand team meticulously studied original pairs from 1985, observing how the shoes had aged through years of storage. As a result, they’ve used materials that reflect this, with cracked leather on the ankle collar, yellowed midsoles, and an oxidised sole—all reminiscent of vintage wear. Additionally, they’ve paid homage to the original release with a thicker Swoosh and a higher cut, echoing the same style seen in the Neutral Grey release from the previous year.
Gone are the usual wrapping papers; instead, they’ve swapped it for what feels like old newspaper, adorned with vintage Jordan ads as a print. The final detail that takes this design to the next level is the inclusion of an old receipt card. Before the age of contactless payments, each pair would come with a hand-signed receipt—an authentic touch that truly completes this nostalgic release.
